Milton ward 2 town councillor John Challinor II wants to end the use and sale of consumer fireworks.

At this week’s council meeting, Challinor put forth a motion asking the Milton Fire Department and Town staff to investigate banning the sale, distribution and setting off of consumer fireworks in Milton.

Challinor said council, the fire department and staff receive numerous complaints every year about the setting off of fireworks that already contravenes the current bylaw, which was revised in 2021.

“The unexpected setting off of fireworks late at night can impact both human beings and animals by damaging their hearing and creating emotional distress,” said the notice of motion.

Challinor said the Ontario Municipal Act allows local municipalities to prohibit and regulate the sale of fireworks and the setting off of fireworks.

He asked the report come back to council before the end of the year.
