Milton events planned to celebrate National AccessAbility Week

The Town of Milton has a series of events planned to celebrate National AccessAbility Week, taking place from May 28 to June 3.

The week recognizes the contributions of Canadians living with disabilities while promoting efforts to increase accessibility and inclusion within the community.

“The Town of Milton strives to be an inclusive community where persons living with disabilities have an equal opportunity to participate in all aspects of our society,” said Mayor Gord Krantz.

“By working together to remove barriers, we can champion accessibility for all.”

Among the events on the schedule are:

Community Flag Raising and Proclamation

Join Mayor Krantz, along with members of the Milton Accessibility Advisory Committee, as they raise the Flag of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities May 29 at 10 a.m. at Milton Town Hall Flag Pole, 150 Mary St.

Virtual Deaf Awareness Workshops

In collaboration with the Bob Rumball Centre of Excellence for the Deaf, the Town will host two free virtual workshops aimed at educating residents about the deaf community in Milton and how to help build a more accessible community. Participants will also practice some basic ASL signs. Registration is required to attend the workshops. Participants can register here.

The virtual workshops are being held Thursday, June 1 from 2 to 3 p.m. and 7 to 8 p.m.

Red Shirt Day

In support of Red Shirt Day, The Town of Milton also encourages residents to wear red on May 31. Red Shirt Day is an annual event, spearheaded by Easter Seals, that encourages Canadians to show their support for persons and families who are living with disabilities while expressing their commitment to support inclusion efforts.
