Restaurants, gyms and salons in Mississauga, Brampton, Hamilton and the rest of Ontario could be back at full operating capacity by Monday.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford is expected to announce later today (Oct. 22) the removal of some of the final restrictions placed on businesses since the onset of the pandemic: restrictions that have kept anxious patrons from flooding into bars, getting back into the workout routine and receiving the full spa treatment.

For well over a year businesses with high levels of social interaction have been placed under the limits which, for the most part, have been capped at 50 per cent capacity.

Sources at Queen’s Park indicate that as well as restaurants, gyms and salons, most meeting events will also see capacity restrictions lifted on Monday.

Masking and social distancing as well as proof of vaccination rules will remain in effect; although speculation persists Ontario will soon be addressing the loosening of these rules, too.

The latest moves follow the earlier relaxation of capacity rules at movie theatres, concert halls and sport stadiums that Ford promised would begin a phasing-out approach of the strict regulations meant to keep COVID-19 in check.

According to sources, the Ontario government has been buoyed by the flattening of COVID cases across the province during the fourth wave and are encouraged as that vaccination rates approach the 90 per cent mark.
