Oakville is set to receive 44 new electric vehicle chargers in the next several months.

To be spread out over the town in high traffic locations, the chargers are part of a federal government program to encourage green environment initiatives.

“We are providing greener options for Canadians to drive where they want to go,” said Seamus O’Regan, Canada’s Minister of Natural Resources. “This is how we get to net-zero by 2050.”

The $220,000 funding for the project comes from the Ministry of Environment’s Zero-Emission Vehicle Infrastructure Program, part of Ottawa’s target to have 100 per cent of passenger vehicles be zero-emission within the next 20 to 30 years.

To reach the emission target, the Government of Canada has provided over $300,000 million to support a network of fast chargers for electric vehicles from coast-to-coast. This includes areas such as apartment buildings, public spaces and workplaces.

The plan is to make it easier for drivers to go green.

“Oakville has one of the highest electric vehicle ownerships per capita in Ontario, and providing easy access for electric vehicles through this program will decrease overall greenhouse gas emissions,” said Oakville Mayor Rob Burton.

The exact locations of the new stations have not yet been revealed.
