More Taxis are Coming to Oakville
We live in a day and age where there are a variety of transportation methods available and easily accessible to residents in the region - GO Transit, buses, UBER, taxis, etc. However, Oakville recently announced that even more taxis will be coming to town soon.
The town has announced that a random draw will take place on Sept. 12, 2019, at 11 a.m. in the Council Chamber of Town Hall. During this draw, 27 plates will be drawn (24 taxicab plates, and three wheelchair accessible plates).
Licences and applications were accepted until Aug. 30, 2019.
Currently, there are 129 taxicab and six wheelchair accessible plates in circulation in Oakville. However, there is now room for more due to a by-law amendment.
Back in December of 2018 Oakville town council passed a licencing by-law amendment regarding the taxicab industry. The changes as a result of this amendment, according to a recent press release, are as follows.
- A ratio for taxicab licence issuance of 1:1,500
- A ratio for wheelchair accessible plates of 1:20
- A random draw issuance model
“The new approved ratio is one taxicab for every 1,500 people,” reads the release. “The town’s current population is 211,000, which means we are now authorized to have 140 taxicab plates operational in Oakville. This will allow the issuance of 11 new taxicab plates. The by-law also allows the town to issue additional plates for any inactive taxicab plates turned in to the Licensing Commissioner. This provides an additional 13 plates to be issued.”
