Investigators have uncovered a huge shipment of illegal cigarettes in Burlington.
A joint operation by Ontario’s Ministry of Finance and the OPP found the cigarettes during a truck stop yesterday.
According to information released by the OPP 9.1 million cigarettes were recovered when the truck was pulled over on Hwy. 407 near Bronte Rd. yesterday (Nov. 20).
A 60-year-old Toronto man has since been charged with trafficking in contraband tobacco.
Under the Tobacco Tax Act, unless otherwise authorized, it is illegal to buy, possess or distribute any quantity of untaxed cigarettes or any other untaxed tobacco products.
Packages of legal cigarettes and fine cut tobacco in Ontario are identified by the Ontario-adapted federal tobacco stamp.
