Multi-million dollar state-of-the-art lab built at Hakim Optical in Etobicoke

When it comes to everything related to glasses and eyewear, Hakim Optical has long been one of the most recognizable and proudly Canadian brands, but they’re not getting complacent.

They’re currently investing in new, high-tech services – such as a massive, multi-million dollar laboratory where your glasses are tailor made to just the right specifications.

Their newest state-of-the-art lab is inside their Etobicoke boutique location at 1880 The Queensway, a popular shopping destination in the area of Sherway Gardens.

Established in 1967, Hakim Optical has been one of the biggest names in eyewear for over 55 years, specializing in quality glasses with strong customer service. They currently have about 650 employees at over 140 stores nationwide, including stores in Mississauga, Brampton, Hamilton, Burlington, Oakville and Milton.

Every Hakim Optical store carries a wide range of products, but for those who want their glasses made with the latest advances in software and hardware machinery, their high-tech Etobicoke lab is definitely worth checking out.

How does it work?

Once the lab receives the customer’s order from the store, they get to work custom building the prescription lenses with all the selected features and upgrades.

The lab uses German engineered and designed technology, such as an optical generator. This high-tech piece of equipment is extremely precise – it grinds the back surface of the lenses with a computer-calculated curvature to produce prescription lenses within a micron (1/1000 millimetre) precision.

The lenses are then polished for the most accurate optical surface possible, given a scratch-resistant and anti-reflection coating, and finally assembled into a finished pair of eyeglasses! After passing a quality control check, they’re shipped to the store for pick up.

In addition to the Etobicoke location, Hakim Optical also has a state-of-the-art lab in Scarborough, in Richmond Hill, and in Winnipeg, Manitoba.

These high-tech labs come with several benefits for customers:

1. Made locally in front of your eyes. If supporting local businesses is a priority for you, getting your glasses from Hakim Optical guarantees they’ll be made locally in their lab with a lot of care and attention, compared to other brands where they may be shipped from overseas with less care.

2. A massive selection. Hakim Optical continues to provide the widest selection of glasses in North America, with tons of frame options for men, women and kids and in any style – whether you’re looking for something modern, stylish, professional, subtle, bold, bright, or even funky. They’ll make sure your frames are fitted perfectly to your face for both style and comfort. Their extensive selection includes contact lenses and prescription safety glasses as well.

3. Strong customer satisfaction. Some brands allow you to order your glasses online, but you can’t try them on until you get them and there’s no guarantee someone will help if there’s a problem with your order. With Hakim Optical, real people are involved in every step of the process, and they go the extra mile to make sure you’re fully satisfied with your new glasses.

For those looking for inspiration, Hakim Optical’s style guide shows off just some of the thousands of styles on offer, with perfectly fitted frames for every mood. Want to add a touch of tint or a UV coating? There are options for that too!

If you don’t have glasses yet but think you may need them, Hakim Optical also offers eye exams through independent Doctors of Optometry.

How often you should get your eyes checked depends on how old you are. Children and teens are advised to get their eyes checked once a year, preferably around August or September to ensure they have the best eyesight for the new school year.

After you hit 20 and your vision stabilizes, you can get your eyes checked just once every two to three years; those between 40 and 64 should check them every two years; and once you’re over 64, revert to annual eye exams as your eyes may begin to decline in your senior years.

With over 55 years of success, the store plans to continue the personal, customized service that’s earned them tons of glowing reviews and testimonials.
