NBA stars Shai Gilgeous-Alexander (Canada) and Luca Doncic (Slovenia) during the recent World Cup.

NBA legend Shaquille O’Neal is calling Oklahoma City Thunder star Shai Gilgeous-Alexander the best point guard in the world, choosing the Hamilton native over Dallas Maverick superstar Luca Doncic on the TNT pre-game show Tuesday.

“He’s one of my favourite players right now,” the long-time Los Angeles Laker centre said of Gilgeous-Alexander (SGA, for short), who is having the best season of his career, sitting third in league scoring and in the midst of an MVP-calibre season.

“Luka is a fabulous player but this kid? He plays the right way and gets his teammates involved. … I’m taking him right now. He’s a helluva a player right now.”

Donic is having quite a year himself and is currently second in NBA scoring, right behing reigning league MVP Joel Embib of Philadelphia.

Gilgeous-Alexander’s Oklahoma City team is second in the western conference, four games ahead of Doncic’s Dallas squad.

O’Neal also inadvertently damned Hamilton with faint praise in his comments, saying one of the reasons he likes SGA is “he came out of nowhere (to be) a force to be reckoned with.”
