New Public Art Piece Being Unveiled in Burlington
Burlington residents are invited to celebrate the official ribbon-cutting of a new public art installation this weekend.
“The many residents and business owners who have been working together to create community and beautify Aldershot Village inspired my work,” said artist Lilly Otasevic.
“This sculpture will not only create a meeting place but will honour the rich history of the neighbourhood.”
The sculpture, dubbed Crescendo (Rising Wave), was created by Otasevic to represent a contemporary and historic Aldershot Village.
The theme links the past, present and future of the neighbourhood.
(If you’re unfamiliar with the term) in music, ‘crescendo’ represents a gradual increase in loudness: a buildup to reach a point of great intensity. This aligns with the change that has occurred in Aldershot Village over the years and is continuing today.
The sculpture’s shape represents a hub of activity in the community, while the wave shape reflects connection to the lake in the neighbourhood.
The public art piece helps beautify Plains Rd. in the west end community.
“We are excited for this new public artwork for the community,” said the city’s manager of arts and culture Angela Paparizo.
“It creates a neighbourhood hub for all to enjoy and adds to the overall public experience in Aldershot Village.”
Residents will have the opportunity to meet the artist at the unveiling and enjoy refreshments.
Keep in mind that parking is limited — residents are encouraged to walk, cycle or use Burlington Transit to attend the event.
The city’s public art program aims to enhance the quality of life for residents by bringing the work of recognized artists to neighbourhoods in Burlington.
“This public artwork enhances the beauty and culture of Aldershot Village,” said Ward 1 Coun. Rick Craven.
“It will draw in pedestrians and create a natural meeting place on Plains Rd.”
The event is taking place at the corner of Plains and Waterdown roads on Saturday, Oct. 21 at 11 a.m.
