No charges for man who called young girl ‘n-word’ in Burlington

Halton Regional Police confirmed that no charges will be laid on a man after a video was shared to Facebook, showing him verbally assault a young girl with racist language.

Halton Regional Police confirmed that no charges will be laid on a man after a video was shared to Facebook, showing him verbally assault a young girl with racist language.

A young user posted the video on June 8, appearing to show a man walk from a home and yell the n-word at a black girl who was rollerblading with friends in the Walkers Line and New St area in Burlington.

The video has since been made private and can no longer be shared.

“My cousin and sister were rollerblading on the street and this guy has the nerve to call my cousin the N word cause they were in the middle of the street,” said to the poster.

The man appeared to yell the slur twice before being confronted by the girls and retreating back to the home.

Police issued a statement Wednesday (June 17), clarifying that while the video was “disturbing and offensive”, there are no charges in the Criminal Code that are applicable.

“The Criminal Code contains provisions for hate crimes but they’re largely reserved for offences involving hate propaganda or the promotion or advocacy of genocide,” said police.

“While a criminal offence may not have been committed, what is seen on the video cannot take place in our society”.

Police then thanked the victims for exposing “the ugliness of racism that still exists”.
