Fire prevention in the home is paramount and the Oakville fire department is looking to inform local residents on just what to do to keep their homes safe.

Oakville Fire is inviting local homeowners and renters to attend free fire prevention seminars this May.

They’ll learn about the legislated responsibilities landlords and tenants each have regarding smoke and carbon monoxide alarms.

The sessions will also include discussion on home escape planning, candle safety, and cooking safety.

Hosted in partnership with the Halton Multicultural Council, the sessions are being held in response to a rising trend of fire incidents and fatalities seen across the province and in Oakville, specifically in rental accommodations including basement apartments.

According to recent data from Ontario’s Office of the Fire Marshal and Emergency Management, there were 133 fire fatalities in the province in 2022, the highest in two decades.

In Oakville alone, between January to end April 2023, there were 46 structure fire incidents including one fatality.

The aim of the fire prevention sessions is to ensure that local residents are doing everything they can to prevent fires and keep themselves and their loved ones safe.

An in-person session will be on Thursday, May 18, 2023 at 11 a.m. at Halton Multicultural Council, located at1092 Speers Road.

A virtual session will be on Wednesday, May 24, 2023 at 6 p.m. via Zoom. Interested attendees can register by emailing [email protected].
