Oakville is working on an update to its Fire Master Plan to guide the rapidly growing community and fire protection and emergency services until 2031.

The plan includes strategies and recommendations to address both short-term and long-term planning horizons for the municipality with a phased action plan, including details of fire services administration, training, fire prevention and public education, fire suppression and emergency response, fire stations, apparatus and equipment, communications and community emergency planning.

In conjunction with the Fire Master Plan, a Community Risk Assessment is also underway which assesses Oakville’s geography, demographics, critical infrastructure, hazards, response to public safety and more.

The revised plan, which requires public feedback, will look at benchmarks and key indicators and of the “three lines of defence” developed during the process:

  • Public Education and Prevention
  • Fire Safety Standards and Enforcement
  • Emergency Response

In conjunction with the Fire Master Plan, a Community Risk Assessment is also underway which assesses Oakville’s geography, demographics, critical infrastructure, hazards, response to public safety and more.

In order to address the growth in north Oakville and the planned intensification the plan cites several important recommendations needed, including the addition of a ninth station (Station 8), which will require a new crew and new pump apparatus; and the future relocation of the existing temporary Station 9 to a permanent location with the timing still to be determined.

Other recommendations on the Fire Master Plan wish list include relocating the Emergency Operations Centre back-up site to a new location and several new hires to keep pace with the Town’s growth.

Residents are encouraged to fill out the Fire Master Plan Survey by October 29 and share suggestions to help ensure the plan provides the community with the most effective and efficient fire protection and emergency services possible.

The Town is also hosting a virtual community information session tonight from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. to learn more about the updates. Follow the Meeting link to participate.
