Oakville streamlining permit process for filmmakers

Oakville is trimming the notice exemption notice required for filmmakers in a Film Pilot Program designed to entice Hollywood to make more movie magic in town.

The application requirement for a noise exemption for the duration of the production was 30 days but after Town Council approved a motion from Councillor Jane Haslet-Theall, the requirement will be cut by two-thirds to just ten days. As well, the 14-day notice required to let residents know shooting will happen in their neighbourhoods was cut in half to just seven days.

“We have to move more quickly to be competitive,” Haslett-Theall said, while getting assurances the Town’s Film Liaison Office would look at any request for late night shooting on a case-by-case basis so residents weren’t inconvenienced.

“That’s what affects the people who are experiencing the noise,” Haslet-Theall noted.

The Town of Oakville, which welcomed action star and former California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger to town this year for his Fubar Netflix series and hosts dozens of productions each year, has never turned down a film request over a noise complaint.
