Oakville high school student Nicholas Rampertab was named as a recipient of the 2020 TD Scholarship for Community Leadership honour.

The Holy Trinity Catholic Secondary School student can receive up to $70,000 for post-secondary tuition and living expenses.

Nicholas launched FIRST Robotics, a program for patients at Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital in Toronto. He then introduced the Best Buddies Robotics program at his school. The program provided marginalized students, including those with developmental disabilities, the opportunity to discover the world of STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics).

In 2018, Nicholas and his team, the “Pilons” won the Robotics World Championship in Louisville, Ky.

2020 marks the 25th anniversary of TD’s scholarship program. 500 different students have received the honour with more than $25 million in scholarship donations since the program’s inception.

According to the organization, in order to be eligible for honour, the student must have demonstrated community leadership, are in the final year of high school, and have a minimum overall grade average of 75% in their most recently completed school year.

Candidates are chosen from a pool of up to 80 finalists who interview with regional selection panels. From there, at least two scholarship recipients are chosen from each of the five regions (Atlantic Canada, Quebec, Ontario, Prairies/Northwest Territories/Nunavut, British Columbia/Yukon).
