Oakville’s Brown gets hit in spring training debut with Toronto Blue Jays

Oakville native Dasan Brown didn’t wait long to take flight with the Toronto Blue Jays at spring training.

Making his spring training debut, the outfielder, considered one of the Blue Jays top prospects, hit a single in his first at bat as the Blue Jays dropped a 7-0 loss to the Atlanta Braves, Monday (Feb. 27) at CoolToday Park in North Port, FL.

Brown came in for Wynton Bernard in his lone at bat of the game and would stay in to play right field. His hit came off Atlanta reliever Lucas Luetge.

A third-round pick in the 2019 amateur draft, the 20-year-old who attended Abbey Park High School is considered a “toolsy” prospect but there little doubt his calling card remains his speed.

Last season he spent time at three levels in the Blue Jays system, beginning in rookie ball before heading to Single ‘A’ with the Dunedin Blue Jays. He wrapped up the year in High ‘A’ with the Vancouver Canadians.

Overall, he hit .283 with six homers, 24 runs batted in and stole 24 bases in 360 plate appearances.

Rated the Blue Jays No. 29 prospect by Baseball America, Brown finished with .298 average in 40 games with Vancouver, while posting a .392 on base percentage.

Baseball American calls the local native “the best athlete in the Blue Jays’ system and one of the fastest players in professional baseball.”

Because of that speed, the “elite athlete” is also considered one of the top defensive outfielders in minor league baseball.
