Oakville’s Ford Motor, Sheridan College among Forbes’ best employers for diversity

When it comes to diversity among its workers, two Oakville employers are among Canada’s best.
Both Sheridan College and Ford Motor Company were named to Forbes’ recently released inaugural list of Canada’s Best Employers for Diversity.
The rankings identify the top 150 companies most dedicated to diversity, equity and inclusion.
Sheridan College, which has 3,548 employees, was ranked 10, while Ford and its 26,000 employees came in at No. 18.
Sheridan was the highest ranked of any college in Canada.
“We are thrilled to be recognized for our commitment to diversity, which we know fuels excellence here at Sheridan and beyond,” says Dr. Janet Morrison, Sheridan’s President and Vice Chancellor.

“Across our three campuses, we’re making meaningful strides towards developing an equitable and inclusive community by actively embedding these values into policies, procedures and decision-making at all levels of the institution.”
Forbes partnered with market research company Statista to come up with the rankings. Over 10,000 professionals working for companies with a minimum of 500 employees in their Canadian operations were surveyed to compile the list.
The final list of employers not only received the most recommendations, but they also boast the most diverse boards and executive ranks and the most proactive diversity and inclusion initiatives.
“Canadians often judge their employers by a different set of criteria than their U.S. counterparts,” Forbes said of compiling the list. “The country’s universal healthcare system and policy of publicly funded parental leave mean that companies need to differentiate themselves in other ways to attract and retain talent.
“Canada is one of the most multicultural nations in the world and creating a diverse and inclusive culture is considered table stakes for many Canadian employers.”
The top ranked company on the list was Hydro-Quebec, while Burlington’s Ikea was also among the top 15 listed companies.
