Sheridan College’s Student Union, its alumni and EDGE, the school’s incubator for social entrepreneurs, are partnering with Tibor Madjar, a Sheridan alumnus who won an Oscar in 2014 for 3D sculpting software used in the film industry, to help students harness AI to build websites.

Madjar is a co-founder of Hocoos, a tool Sheridan students can use to showcase their work to potential employers, create a digital space for their portfolios, or for those who may be starting up entrepreneurial ventures.

By answering eight simple questions, users can get Hocoos to turn their basic information into a customized website.

“At Sheridan, students are creating all sorts of projects. Ideally, I would want all of them to be able to build their own websites to showcase their work and have the opportunity to learn about this entrepreneurship tool,” Madjar said.

The program, seen as a gamechanger in the digital media-driven environment where having a professionally built website is a must, has been generating close to 1,000 websites each day since its soft launch in April.

Madjar arrived in Canada in 1988 from Hungary with hopes of becoming an electrical engineer. Instead, he enrolled at the Ontario College of Art – his uncle was a well-known Serbian landscape painter – before coming to Oakville and Sheridan’s world renowned animation program.

He graduated in 1999 and has made significant contributions to the entertainment and technology sectors in the nearly quarter-century since. In 2014, he won an Academy Award for scientific and technical achievement for conceiving and designing Mudbox – a 3D sculpting software used to create detailed characters and environments in films such as Lord of the Rings, King Kong, Avatar, Life of Pi, The Dark Knight, and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button.

He is also the Co-Founder of PayPro Global, one of the world’s leading eCommerce partners, which now supports 25 languages, more than 110 global currencies, and more than 70 payment methods worldwide.

A self-proclaimed ‘Supreme Sorcerer, Archwizard and Ruler of the Hocoos Republic’ – so says his Linkedin profile – Madjar is currently working on his latest passion project, a robot painter.

Sheridan students can access the Hocoos’ user-friendly platform for free to take the hassle out of creating a website, making it a simple experience for everyone from students to aspiring entrepreneurs. For a little extra – $30 per year – students will have access to premium AI-powered tools to help design, write, and engage like a pro.

EDGE student members will be able to create 200 free Hocoos Premium websites, and non-student members receive a 50 per cent discount off the premium rate. For Sheridan alumni, a 15 per cent discount is available.

Hocoos is of particular importance to students who want to showcase and sell their products online as a step toward launching their own businesses – something Madjar realized after he found his own daughter, a Sheridan student, trying to set up a website to sell the jewellery she designs.  “A website is a great tool for entrepreneurs.”
