Oshawa’s Biltmore Theatre hosting free Reelworld documentary

Fresh off a screening of Oliver Stone’s documentary Nuclear Now at the Regent Theatre last week, another thought provoking night at the movies is coming to downtown Oshawa next Monday, this time to the Biltmore Theatre across the street.

Reelworld, an organization dedicated to changing the face of the media landscape by empowering and showcasing Canadians identifying as Black, Indigenous, Asian, and POC, through the power of film, is inviting the community to see a feature documentary that aims to spark conversations about how we can support each other during these “uncertain times.”

The Biltmore will host Unarmed Verses, a documentary directed by Charles Officer that presents a working class community facing an imposed relocation through the observations of one of its residents. Also on the June 5 bill is On the Fence, directed by Paula Ner Dormiendo, a short documentary that follows several conversations with a multicultural film crew voicing their intertwined experiences, delving into the question, ‘what is culture?’

The provincially funded screenings are also being held in Kitchener-Waterloo (June 6), Oakville (June 7) and Guelph (June 8).

The free event – refreshments will be served – will be followed by an informal discussion about important topics such as housing, home-ownership and community. Reelworld moderator Sapphire Woods will lead the discussion, which will also feature a special guest.
