Outbreak declared at Joseph Brant Hospital in Burlington

An outbreak of COVID-19 has been declared at two of the inpatient units at Joseph Brant Hospital.

An outbreak of COVID-19 has been declared at two of the inpatient units at Joseph Brant Hospital.

According to a statement from the hospital on Saturday, April 11, two healthcare workers and three patients tested positive for the virus at units 3 North 700 and 6 North.

“We are working closely with Halton Public Health and are monitoring all patients, staff and physicians who had direct contact with those infected with COVID-19,” the hospital said in a statement. “All patients on the units, along with staff and physicians who were exposed, have been contacted and tested.”

The affected healthcare workers are currently isolating at home and reportedly have not come into the hospital since they developed symptoms.

Patients in the units are under quarantine and are instructed to self-quarantine for 14 days when they are later discharged from the hospital.

The hospital says it has immediately taken a number of other safety measures, including closing the units to any new admissions, enhancing cleaning in the units, and increasing education on the use of personal protective equipment, hand washing, and physical distancing.

“We are taking this situation very seriously. We are committed to providing safe, quality care for our patients and our Burlington community during this unprecedented time,” said Joseph Brant Hospital.
