An older phone message scam has resurfaced in Burlington.

“A recent texting scam has been reported to be active in our region,” the public utility states. “The text is falsely identified as being from Burlington Hydro.”

This scam first surfaced in 2022 when Burlington customers were receiving messages that power would be cut off unless payment was received by credit card over the phone. They are also threatening to cut off water unless payment is immediate.”

The scammer identified themselves as a Burlington Hydro representative.

In reality, Burlington Hydro representatives never ask customers for banking or credit card information over the phone.

The electric company warns customers to be vigilant despite how convincing the callers or messages may be.

“(The messages) could take many forms and cause confusion with our customers,” the warning notes. “Never respond to texts that allude to a remittance. Delete the text immediately. If it is a caller just hang up.”

The number 1-866-932-6616 on your call display is a legitimate Burlington Hydro number.

Call Burlington Hydro customer service at 905-332-1851 to report an incident. Callers should also report the incident to the OPP’s Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501.
