Fire from a burning tractor-trailer brought traffic to a halt today (Sept. 19) but the clean-up snarled traffic for hours along the Burlington Skyway.

The accident happened around 10:30 a.m. when the truck hit a wall along the Niagara-bound lanes and burst into flames.

The driver was taken to hospital and the cause of the crash is still under investigation.

As of late tonight, traffic was still backed up on the QEW but some lanes have reopened. The OPP is still telling motorists to avoid the area.

Fallout from the scene on the Skyway was felt for hours on adjacent roads in both Hamilton and Burlington as motorists searched for alternate routes. Complicating matters is the construction on the Canal Lift Bridge which has also limited movement through the area.

According to the OPP, the truck spilled fuel along the road as well as losing its load of pink insulation material. The Hazmat team of the Hamilton Fire Department had to be called in to contain the spill.
