PICK A SIDE: Is November too soon to be putting up Christmas decorations

Now that Halloween is over, and, unlike our neighbours to the South, we celebrate Thanksgiving in October, many people have set their sights on Christmas.

It seems that as soon as October ends stores have cleared away their Halloween decorations and ushered in Christmas ones.

But, for those of us who aren’t trying to sell people something, how soon is too soon?

I grew up in a small suburb of Ottawa. Most people didn’t do much in the way of decorating for the holidays… with the exception of Christmas.

Most houses on my street would have lights up by earlier November (in their defense, Ottawa usually gets snow by then, so they didn’t feel out of place).

However, since moving to Toronto, I noticed a debate surging among residents about Christmas decorations. Some people believe November is too soon to start decorating.

I asked around and people seemed very divided on the issue. One person I spoke to said people should wait at least until after Remembrance Day to put up decorations out of respect.

Another person said the earliest acceptable time to put them up is December—anything earlier is too soon.

Conversely, one woman said she enjoys Christmas and likes to spread the cheer and merriment for as long as possible, so she begins decorating after Halloween ends and she said if people don’t like it they’re probably not fans of Christmas in general.

So, Mississauga, it’s time to… PICK A SIDE!

Is November too early to be putting up Christmas decorations?
