Police identify Hamilton shooting victims

The province’s Special Investigations Unit says it has collected five firearms from a suspect’s home and retrieved video footage in the Hamilton neighbourhood where two tenants were shot dead over the weekend.

The weapons will be forwarded to the Centre of Forensic Sciences for further examination, according to the SIU in updates provided this afternoon (May 30). In addition, one police-issued firearm was collected; it belonged to the officer whose actions are being investigated. Officials are analyzing the video as they continue to canvass the area for evidence and witnesses in the investigation of the fatal shootings in Stoney Creek.

Also, the independent government agency said a post-mortem was conducted today (May 30) on the  57-year-old suspect, who was the landlord shot by police.

Hamilton police have released the names of the victims with permission of the family.  Carissa MacDonald, 27, of Stoney Creek, who previously lived in Huntsville, and Aaron Stone, 28, of Hamilton, died from the shootings Saturday (May 27), police announced.

“The families of both victims are requesting privacy at this time,” according to the police in a statement.

The police and the SIU are not releasing the name of the suspect, believed to be the landlord. “At the request of family, the Unit is not releasing the man’s name. This is in accordance with the SIU’s name release policy which requires consent from next of kin,” according to the SIU.

Reports say the property’s owner was Terry Brekka, 57, a steelworker who lived at the residence for several years.

The Special Investigations Unit is investigating the conduct of police connected to the landlord’s death while Hamilton police are looking into the double homicide case.
