A popular stop for Portuguese food lovers in Oakville has unfortunately closed its doors for good.

The family owned and operated Portuguese Rotisserie and Grill, located at 2530 Sixth Line in Unit 6, has gone out of business.

Manny Vargas said he was sad to see the popular take-out restaurant have to close its doors.

“We loved their cod dishes,” said Vargas. “The chicken, potato and rice was always a must with that hot sauce, but I loved all the Portuguese specialty dishes.

“They reminded me so much of how my mom used to make them. I stopped in there all the time. These are tough times and it’s too bad to see it have to close. It was fantastic food.”

The Portuguese take-out location had grown quite the following for its Peri Peri chicken, rice and potato dinners, but the variety of traditional Portuguese dishes proved a hit with customers.

Those included Portuguese favourites such as cod with oven baked potatoes or in a cream sauce, pan fried stickleback, fish fillets and even octopus stew.

Comfort dishes included fava bean stew with Portuguese sausage, pea stew with poached egg and Portuguese sausage or the Feijoada Com Debrada (pork, beans and tribe).

“A little taste from back home,” said Vargas, who also loved the pork belly sandwhich loaded with peppers and onions.

“The service was great and the food always top shelf. It really is too bad it had to close. It was right around the corner from where we live.”
