An animal rights activist killed outside of a Burlington meat processing plant in June has been honoured for her advocacy.

An animal rights activist killed outside of a Burlington meat processing plant in June has been honoured for her advocacy.

Regan Russell, 65, died after she was struck by a truck during a demonstration at Fearmans Pork Plant on Harvester Rd. in June.

On Monday, the Hamilton/Burlington SPCA (HBSPCA) posthumously recognized Regan with the Dr. Jean Rumny Award, given to individuals who have shown a commitment and dedication to animals and the community served by the HBSPCA. The award was presented to Regan’s family at a gathering in Burlington.

“Regan was curious, passionate and tireless in her aspiration for a humane world”, CEO Marion Emo said in a statement.

Regan died while attempting to give water to pigs that were on the truck and on their way to slaughter.

The 28-year-old driver of the vehicle was subsequently charged Careless Driving Causing Death under the Highway Traffic Act .
