While the next few days are supposed to be hot and dry (temperatures are expected to hit the 30s and stay there for the Canada Day long weekend), today is supposed to be on the wetter side.

The Ministry of the Environment recently said that portions of Southern Ontario may receive heavy downpours today, beginning in the later hours of the morning and persisting into the afternoon.

The agency also says scattered thunderstorms are possible for tonight and that isolated areas may receive rainfall amounts of 20 to 40 mm–particularly areas that receive thunderstorms.

Credit Valley Conservation (CVC) says that while flooding of the Credit River and its major tributaries are not expected, intense rainfall associated with thunderstorms may result increased flows in small headwater and urban areas.

“Some sub-watersheds may also respond with higher flows and water levels. As a result, local streams and rivers could become dangerous, especially in the vicinity of culverts, bridges and dams,” CVC writes. “Children should be warned to stay away from all watercourses.”

CVC says the watershed conditions statement for water safety will be in effect through Thursday, June 28 or until further notice.
