Process begins to build next Oakville elementary school

The first step to building Oakville’s next elementary school begins today (June 2) with official groundbreaking ceremonies.
To be located on Wheat Boom Dr. in the Dundas St. E. and Eighth Line area, the school is being built to meet the demands of continuing development in northeast Oakville. It will also alleviate pressure on other schools that have been accommodating the growth in the area.
Yet-to-be-named, the school will be three-storeys and feature learning spaces with natural light, air conditioning with individual classroom controls, an open concept library, a music room, stage and double gym and will be designed to promote a walk-to-school environment.
Approximately 788 students from Kindergarten to Grade 8 will call the school home during the day. The facility will also contain five childcare rooms which will accommodate 88 students, providing infant, toddler and preschool-aged services.
The school, which is targeted to open for the 2024-2025 school year, has a construction budget of approximately $30 million. The Halton District School Board (HDSB) has awarded the architectural tender to Hossack & Associates Architects Inc. of Mississauga, and the construction contract to Everstrong Construction of Georgetown.
“As the Oakville community continues to experience tremendous growth, this school will alleviate enrollment pressure at other Oakville elementary schools,” says Margo Shuttleworth, Chair of the HDSB. “We thank the Ministry of Education for their support in making this happen and enabling the HDSB to continue to grow alongside the communities we serve.”
In attendance at the groundbreaking ceremony will be HDSB trustees, senior administrative staff, local government officials, area residents and a number of students who will attend the new school once it opens.
