Province reports over 4,000 COVID-19 cases for first time in almost 8 months, 159 people in ICU

The province is now reporting over four thousand new COVID cases, with 4,177 cases today, Dec. 19 (up 876 from yesterday) and two more deaths.

This is the highest daily case count since the province reported 4,505 new cases on April 23, 2021.

There are 2,039 new cases in Toronto, 365 in York, 311 in Peel (Mississauga, Brampton and Caledon), 245 in Halton, 240 in Durham, 175 in Hamilton, and 107 in Niagara Region.

“Individuals who are not fully vaccinated represent 22.9% of Ontario’s total population & amount to 1,047 of Ontario’s 4,177 new reported cases. 153 cases are in individuals with an unknown vaccination status,” said Health Minister Christine Elliott.

283 people are hospitalized with COVID-19 and 159 people are in ICU, Elliott reports.

25,315,780 vaccine doses have been administered in Ontario to date, with nearly 90.4% of Ontarians 12+ having received one dose and 87.8% having received two doses.

Effective starting today (Dec. 19), social gathering limits and indoor capacity limits are in place in Ontario in response to a rise in Omicron variant cases.
