Families in Oakville, Burlington and Milton wanting to learn more about the I-Stem program can do so at three Halton District School Board (HDSB) Open Houses being held this Thursday (Nov. 3).

The open houses, taking place at Aldershot School in Burlington, Elsie MacGill Secondary School in Milton, and T.A. Blakelock High School in Oakville, will help inform attendees about the innovative, regional four-year program for secondary students.

I-STEM (Innovation – Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) enables students to develop innovation skills related to engineering design and design thinking, entrepreneurial thinking skills and global competencies.

Students will have enhanced learning opportunities through community and post-secondary partnerships.

The program begins with students entering Grade 9 and will be offered at Aldershot, Elise MacGill and T.A. Blakelock in the 2023-2024 school year.

“I-STEM has been designed to prepare students for future trends in the workforce and help students solve complex economic, social and environmental problems,” says Nick Frankovich, Superintendent of Education – School Programs for the HDSB. “With the success of the I-STEM program at Aldershot School in Burlington and Elsie MacGill Secondary School in Milton, the Board is excited to expand the program at T.A. Blakelock High School in Oakville.

“We look forward to sharing with families and the community what current I-STEM students and faculty are accomplishing in the program and showcase the innovative learning space.”

The presentation will be hosted by I-STEM faculty, followed by a Question & Answer session.

During the Open House, students and families will learn about the:

  • four-year program and I-STEM certificate,
  • unique opportunities and partnerships (in person and virtually),
  • STEM learning resources,
  • new location for the program at T.A. Blakelock HS in Oakville (in addition to Aldershot School in Burlington and Elsie MacGill SS in Milton), and
  • the application process.

The I-STEM program has been developed in collaboration with innovators, educators, industry leaders and community members, including McMaster University, University of Guelph, University of Toronto, Sheridan College, Conservation Halton and Let’s Talk Science.
