High-end grocery store brand Pusateri’s is apologizing to shoppers for what it’s calling a pricing error on Lysol disinfecting wipes.

The apology comes after a furious, two-minute call out by Ontario Premier Doug Ford during a March 26 press conference. While speaking to reporters about new investments in health care amid the COVID-19 pandemic, Ford took a moment to berate Pusateri’s for charging $30 for Lysol wipes.

Ford called the pricing “disgusting” and promised to pass legislation to make pandemic price gouging illegal.

“A message to anyone who price gauges: we’re going to come after you and we’re going to come after you hard,” he told reporters.

Pusateri’s promptly apologized and said the wipes were overpriced in error

“While no excuse, our stores are facing immense pressure on all levels of the operation. As a result of this mounting pressure, critical elements were overlooked including the incorrect pricing of this product,” Frank Luchetta, President & CEO, said in a statement posted to the brand’s website.

“This was our mistake, our error, our oversight and we apologize to everyone impacted. We are promptly reviewing and adjusting any and all products that may have been improperly listed and every individual who purchased this product will be fully refunded by emailing [email protected].”

Luchetta said items will not be incorrectly priced going forward.

“We are a family-owned and operated business and we share the concern of the new realities that COVID-19 has created for everyone. This should have never happened, and it will never happen again.”
