It’s rare that the RCMP issues a scam warning, but now, anyone who has access to email in Mississauga should beware of a new email scam that’s going around.

A fraudulent email has popped up this week, according to the RCMP National Division NCR Traffic Services.

This week, the RCMP said that it was recently made aware of emails claiming to be from the RCMP.

If you receive a fraudulent email, the email will claim that you owe money for traffic violations. Be wary – there’s an RCMP logo, a case number listed, and an amount owed listed in the email. The email is made to look official.

Whether or not you have ever dealt with the RCMP, it has warned residents that “it does not serve or issue charges or traffic violations by email, regardless of the type of offence.”

So, if you receive a fraudulent email from the RCMP saying you’ve commited a traffic offence, first, don’t reply, and second, report it to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre.

If you have been a victim of this scam, you should contact your local police detachment.
