It’s not the next installment of Star Wars, but the training and skill development equivalent to a Jedi for ‘Snow Fighter’ training is taking place in Burlington this week.

Snow Fighters, which include those who operate snow plows, sanders, salters and brine trucks, will be training and practising their skills throughout the park’s roads and parking lots to ensure the Snow Fighters are ready for the city’s first snowfall.

“There is a lot of work that goes into clearing the roads and we’re doing everything to be prepared,” said manager of road operations Mark Adam.

“There are 1,900 kms of road and 850 kms of sidewalk to prepare for. Above all, our drivers’ top priority is safety. Residents are asked to keep the streets clear during snowfall and to be patient while our crews clear the primary and secondary roads first.”

Training will close City View Park from Oct. 24 to Oct. 26.

There’s no public access from 7 a.m. until 5 p.m. on those days.

To ensure their safety, park users are asked to use another park —visit burlington.ca/parks— or visit City View after 5 p.m.

“Having safe, clear roads during winter is no easy task but our Snow Fighter crews will be ready to maneuver and clear the streets to help keep people and goods moving, and more importantly, safe,” said Mayor Rick Goldring.

SNOW TIPS

  • Residents can assist in the quick and efficient removal of snow from our streets and sidewalks by removing cars parked on the street during or after a snowfall and by giving snowplows distance to clear the snow and ice when driving.
  • Snowplows are wide and the operators’ field of vision is restricted. Keep your distance and watch for sudden stops or turns.
  • Visit www.burlington.ca/snow to view the WhereIsMySnowplow and see which streets in Burlington have been plowed.
  • Know where to throw your snow. When you’re clearing your driveway and walkways, please throw your snow in your yard, rather than on the street.
  • During an extreme weather event, such as a snow storm, please check on neighbours who might need help, and please drive only if it is necessary.
