Reading is fun … and fundamental to child development so here’s some good news for young families in Milton.

It’s happening all summer.

Milton Transit is partnering with the Milton Public Library for the 10th year to offer the Read and Ride program.
The program runs from July 3 to Sept. 1.

Youth 16 years of age and younger can ride Milton Transit for free by showing their validated library card to the bus driver upon boarding any conventional service bus. The validated card allows them to ride free on Milton Transit to anywhere in town.

“The Read and Ride Program helps the younger members of our community continue with learning over the summer through reading and exploring our community,” said Milton Mayor Gord Krantz.

“This year, I am delighted to announce that the program has been extended to 16 years of age to encourage even more youth to travel around town and engage in summer activities.”

In 2017, the library validated 790 cards with more than 2,000 free additional transit trips taken through this program during the summer.

Transit validation stickers are free and available at Milton Public Library (main library and Beaty branch), starting June 23.

Children 8-years-old and younger should be accompanied by a parent or guardian while riding any transit system.

Residents are invited to attend the launch for the Read and Ride program as part of the kick-off for the Milton Public Library’s TD Summer Reading Club.

It takes place on June 23 at the main library (1010 Main St. E.), and Beaty branch (945 Fourth Line) from 1 p.m. until 3 p.m.

A Milton Transit bus will be on hand for boarding and exploring at the main library.

Youth will receive their validation stickers and can participate in games and special activities.
