If you were watching some little league baseball in Oakville this summer and thought you saw actors Luke Wilson and Greg Kinnear on the field, you likely did.

The Hollywood stars were in Oakville for a series of 12 days over June and July shooting You Gotta Believe, a movie based on a true story of the 2022 Forth Worth, Tex.-based Westport Little League team that unexpectedly made it to the Little League World Series in Williamsport, Pennsylvania.

In the movie, the team dedicates its season to a player’s dying father and end up defying all the odds by making it all the way to the championship in a game that became an ESPN classic.

Hosted by the Oakville Little League, the film was shot at both diamonds at Cornwall Road Park for six days in both June and July from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day.

The movie was shot predominantly in Toronto, as well at Labatt Park in London and Arnold Anderson Stadium in Brantford. Filming began on June 12 and concluded on July 26.

“We’re excited to confirm rumours of a movie being filmed at Cornwall over the next several weeks,” said a thrilled Oakville Little League on its website before shooting of the film began.

In the movie, Wilson plays the role of the dying father, Bobby Ratliff. The actor is known for playing Richie Tenenbaum in Wes Anderson’s The Royal Tenenbaums.

Wilson, who is the younger brother of actors Andrew Wilson and Owen Wilson, also starred in Best Men (1998), Legally Blonde (2001), Idiocracy (2006) and Vacancy (2007), opposite Kate Beckinsale.

Kinnear plays Westside’s coach Jon Kelly. The actor is known for portraying Simon Bishop in As Good As It Gets, starring Jack Nicholson. He was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor in the role.

He has also appeared in You Got Mail (1998), Little Miss Sunshine (2006), Green Zone (2010) and had television roles in Friends, Modern Family and House of Cards.

The movie was directed by Ty Roberts, who is known for directing 12 Mighty Orphans.

Others in the cast of You Gotta Believe include Sarah Gadon, Molly Parker, Patrick Renna and Connor McMahon.

Cosmetic changes were made to the Cornwall Road Park diamonds for the movie, such as a concession behind the West diamond, green padding around the back stop, U.S. flags and fencing blocking the view to the street.

The Oakville Little League clubhouse was also used to tutor the child actors. The local baseball league also received financial compensation from the production company.

A date of when the movie is to be released has yet to be announced.
