First, it was Lord Elgin High School.

Then, after a merger with General Brock High School, it became Robert Bateman High School.

In the future, it will likely be called something else.

The City of Burlington will look to the public to come up with a name for what will become the newest community centre on the local landscape when it opens in either late 2024 or early 2025.

The conversion of the old Bateman site will see a multi-faceted centre that will not only be a traditional community centre but also house businesses and other agencies such as a campus for Brock University. The entire project will cost taxpayers about $100 million.

While some have suggested that the Bateman name be retained, others have said the conversion provides the opportunity to have a name that reflects the community in which it is situated.

Bateman himself, now 93 and living in British Columbia, is a nationally known artist and naturalist. The school was named after him at the height of his fame and followed his stint as a teacher at the school in the 1970s. The school closed in 2020 and was obtained by the City last year.

Over the next few months, Burlington will look for input from the community on a name which will ultimately be selected based on certain criteria.

Burlington will also eventually look for corporate sponsor names for the facility that will be able to generate revenue for the City.
