Top 5 Hidden Places Near Halton

Ontario has an ample of great hidden spots such as turquoise swimming holes and old ruins. If you love hiking or walking great distances into the wilderness, then you would love discovering these hidden places. So, why not leave your phone behind, disconnect from the world and go back to a time where we didn’t have to worry about social media or the latest fad?

Here is a list of the top 5 hidden places near you.


5.) Mono Cliffs

Mono Cliffs is one of the best conservation areas in Ontario. People can explore this 732-hectare park. A 20-kilometre trail leads you to some of the greatest hidden sights and natural wonders. Located in the Niagara Escarpment, this cliff-top side trail cuts through canyons, boardwalks, staircases and swimming spots.

4.) The Topaz Lake

Located inside Killarney Provincial Park, there is a beautiful lake you have to see to believe. This is one of Ontario’s few turquoise lakes, plus it is vacant most of the time. It can only be reached after an 11-kilometre hike through the provincial park, which is why a few people know about this spot. If you don’t want to hike up that long trail, you can pay for a boat cruise to take you there.

3.) Carbide Wilson Ruins

Thomas “Carbide” Wilson was the scientist who developed the process for creating calcium carbide. He built his home in the middle of the forest to protect his ideas from his competition. His home is located in Gatineau Park near Ottawa. Later on, he built his workshop near Meech Lake. Today, the workshop and his home is a beautiful ruin surrounding by plant life and a frozen waterfall in the winter.

2.) Hogg’s Falls

To get to this hidden waterfall and swimming spot, people must hike through a 1.4-kilometre trail. Located in a small town called Flesherton, this is Grey County’s best secret. At the end of this short walk, people can find a rope leading them to the bottom. Grey County has many different waterfalls to visit, but the best one is always hidden.

1.) Warsaw Caves Conservation Area

There are many caves around our province, but the best ones are a secret. People must walk through a 5.3-kilometre trail that leads to these caves. The trail leads through forests and limestone plains with a scenic view of the disappearing river. Located in the Indian River valleys, the Warsaw Caves Conservation Area is the ultimate adventure to get to. There are seven caves in total to explore and a sandy beach to relax at after.
