If you’re looking for a bonafide hipster hot spot in Oakville, Bru is your go-to resto. The downtown joint - which recently moved - hits every mark when it comes to on-trend dining: a rustic interior, an enviable craft beer selection (the best of its kind in the town, in fact) and a menu full of modern pub fare (some of which is gluten-free and vegan-friendly). Plus, they’re proud of the fact there’s no Wi-Fi (go ahead and act like it’s 1995 … talk to each other, the sign urges). Nestled along ‘restaurant row’, Bru supports more than 15 Ontario breweries and offers a variety of on-tap and bottled brews. As far as food goes, the diverse menu is satisfying and unique. If you’re in the mood for something tangy and light, try the flatbread, featuring roasted butternut squash, whipped ricotta cream, onion jam, and fine herbs. (I legit ate the whole platter). On the board at Bru you’ll find an assortment of daily cured meats, pates, and terrines chosen by the chef.
Traditional Greek cuisine with a sophisticated atmosphere. If you’re a lover of traditional Greek cuisine, then there’s a pretty good chance you love your meats. If that’s the case, the Grecian Platter is what you’re looking for. This platter for two comes with pita, sausage, chicken souvlaki, pork souvlaki, gyros, breaded kalamari, breaded shrimp, 2 Greek salads, rice pilaf, and lemon potatoes. How’s that for a platter? While the quantity may be immense, the quality here is key. The gyros were some of the best I’ve had in a very long time, and I’ll be surprised if they don’t raise an eyebrow or two when you try them as well. Got a craving for cheese? They have some flaming pan fried cheese and grilled halloumi that may just satisfy!
3. Bryden’s Pub & Restaurant
Just awesome. This tender, tasty, seasoned patty brings me so much joy, the bartender is grinning from ear to ear because I can’t talk when she checks on me and I only manage a thumbs-up to let her know it’s amazing. She says all of their food tastes that good! The juicy burger, made in-house, is served with hand-cut fries. I’ll most definitely be back for more pub grub at Bryden’s.
There’s good chicken and there’s chicken that’s tasty as cluck (that wasn’t a typo). Brant St. is home to this fun, laidback resto … you may recognize the name from Hamilton’s original King St. W. location. Doors opened in March 2017 and locals are flocking to the place. Featuring lunch, dinner, and boozy weekend brunch, Coop Wicked Chicken offers fresh in-house food made with high-quality ingredients. Pulled sandwiches are popular … we went with the Smoky BBQ ($11.99). Shredded meat is doused in a tangy, tasty sauce and the coleslaw adds a nice crunch. Other offerings include Deep-Fried Deviled Eggs (fantastic!), Sriracha Honey Cauliflower (for the vegans in your life), Hardcore Pulled Chicken Poutine, and Chicken & Waffles topped with an egg — this was absolutely phenomenal. The atmosphere is unpretentious and fun. Service is great. If you’re a chicken when it comes to heat, consider yourself warned. This platter of Nashville Chicken Nachos is delicious and pretty spicy (and I grew up on hot foods … trust). There’s also a Mexi Beef or Veg option. The resto has added a digital vending machine for soft drinks (just like ones movie theatres use now) so you can get up and refill your own cups.
While the original pho here is quite textbook, it’s the satay pho that really grabbed me by the taste buds! Having the option to choose from either is always nice, but if you’re feeling a little adventurous, the satay option is more than worth a try. A milky coconut flavour sets in with every spoonful and o my is it delightful! If the aroma doesn’t get you, the flavour will. Get it to go and enjoy it at home.
