Anything named after a cow has to be delicious because the bar is set far too high. After much deliberation and consultation with the owner, who humoured my talking in circles about “not really being into crepes,” I went with the Moo La La. It’s a Belgian waffle topped with a sliced banana, Nutella, chocolate ice cream and crunchy praline croquant. The owner really went out of his way to accommodate — he noticed I was cold and moved me to a warmer location, close to an outlet to plug in my devices. Attentiveness always scores points! But back to the waffle. It was huge and even though I’d just had lunch, I devoured that heap of hazelnut-chocolaty goodness in no time. The extensive menu at Demetre covers just about every sweet craving humanly possible. Go big or go home!
When the meaty juice drips from your hands to the plate, there’s something special in store. A pretzel bun encompasses this juicy meat patty, which leaves me in awe of their recent menu changes (they’ve switched their fries and swapped the bun). Ned’s Classic Burger comes dressed with lettuce, tomato, dill pickle, and red onion. This burger was the bomb! I had no expectations when ordering it, but wow … mind blown. The meat was perfectly seasoned and it was so tender inside … it nearly crumbled in my mouth. The pretzel bun was soft and it was an absolutely perfect combination of flavour. I nearly scarfed down this entire burger in a few minutes and the server was all smiles when I asked for a box to take home the last two bites. It’s. That. Damn. Good. Even with plenty of dining options nearby, with a burger like this, Ned’s is sure to be full all summer.
Come for the Eggless Egg Sandwich and leave with dessert — a plant-based resto has opened along Lakeshore Rd. E. — so tell all the vegans, raw food enthusiasts, and Paleo/Crossfitters in your life. If you’re looking for a place to grab cheap eats in downtown Oakville, this is your next stop. Dar Nabati opened April 27, 2018, and is offering up a variety of light options. One of the very best items on the menu: Baked Egyptian Falafel. They’re made with fava beans and served hot, without a hint of dryness, and drizzled with tahini. (And I certainly don’t miss the upset stomach which accompanies traditionally fried falafel). The Eggless Egg Sandwich is delicious, garnished with scallions and dill. You should try it.
This hip Italian bar-slash-gastropub is one of the newest along Brant St., taking over the former Eatalia spot. I found this place while strolling downtown … the stunning aesthetic caught my eye so I went in to find out more, quickly realizing it’s Burlington’s best-kept (burger, pasta, bread … carb-loading) secret. To start, get the Sourdough Bread plate — with housemade bread, ricotta cheese, and an incredible butter compound. Then, just order the gnocchi and wait … it’s made in-house and you’ll quickly realize you’re in a legit Italian resto. There’s oodles of dairy and flavour and it’s so stellar you may nearly explode with happiness. The friendly owner, Jerod, and staff work hard to provide a stellar experience. Oh, and by the way, they’ve got craft beer on beer on beer on beer! Dozens … close to 100 varieties. Culaccino opened around summer 2016 and weekends are fully booked. Who says Italian restos have to be dark, stuffy, and old-fashioned?
1. King Szechuan
A nice modern looking restaurant with friendly service and delicious food! Prices here justify the taste. The Ye He Fried Rice is a house special rice with chicken, barbeque pork, and shrimp. It’s got quite a bit of flavour and can be had as a dish on its own. The sizzling garlic chicken was definitely a blockbuster here! The sizzle was so loud I couldn’t even hear our server speak! The sizzling platter helps to heighten the flavour and aroma of the garlic and the onions in the dish. King Szechuan is definitely one of the more flavourful restos on this list.
