5. Ivy Arms

This bar isn't pretty but it's pretty popular. Often dubbed the best patio in town, the raised outdoor surface allows for prime people-watching along Main St., while a seat at the bar will never do you wrong inside. Regulars, including bonafide foodies, recommend this place to just about everyone. So off we went ... The breaded wings (with light flour) were crispy and hot, as per the server's promise. Sauces aren't made in-house. We tried the hot and honey, medium, and honey garlic. (The order comes with celery, carrots and ranch). The medium sauce had a hint of spice to it and went down real nice ... so nice, I'd drink that sauce right out of the jug.

4. On A Bun

The menu at this Hays Blvd. sandwich shop lists a wide variety of Italian sandwiches, including Veal, Chicken, Steak and Onions, Meatball, Sausage and Onions, Veggie, and Eggplant Parmesan. I've heard so much about this authentic family run Italian sandwich joint that I had to finally make a pit stop for a quick bite and see if it's really "perfection on a bun." Old-world Italian recipes and techniques are followed at this shop, where you'll feel as though you're at a family gathering, from the way you're greeted to the way staff bid you farewell. The Veal sandwich is everything you'd expect it to be - greasy, meaty, made to order - and then some. Make sure you add cheese and mushrooms to take it up a notch! The Eggplant Parmesan is also outstanding. Service is phenomenal.

3. Plank

The bread is freshly baked in-house and that salami ... oh my. It just might be the best sliced meat I've ever tasted. This margherita pizza with spicy salami brought out my inner ninja turtle. This Bronte Rd. restobar, south of Lakeshore Rd., absolutely blew me away with their pizza, featuring fresh basil, fior di latte, and tomato sauce. It's simplicity at its finest. (Pro tip: They serve pizza bread with the beet hummus -- it's phenomenal).

2. Hakka Fresh

When Indian and Chinese spices mix, you get Hakka style cuisine! Decent sized portions, and very flavourful profiles on almost everything on the menu. Whether it's Chilli Chicken (highly recommended to be had 'dry'), Garlic Fish, Manchurian style, or a healthy serving of fried rice or chow mein, there's something for everyone on the menu! If you're looking to put a twist on your usual Chinese take-out, or if you can't decide between Chinese or Indian, Hakka Fresh is an option for you!

1. Squires Public House

This long-running Fairview St. pub has a loyal following, and it's a family-friendly place, with lots of booths and plenty of sports enthusiasts by the bar. Servers know the regulars by name. Mostly known for fish and chips, the casual restaurant offers super-friendly service. Baked Bacon Mac and Cheese arrives in a cast-iron skillet with a cute little mitt. Clearly, it's been in the oven. It has a four-cheese blend, elbow macaroni, bacon, and house-made cheese sauce. It's delicious. There's no salt, and I'm down with that because bacon is salty and I'd rather no salt than too much. Next time you're in the mood for something hot, cheesy, and filling, you should try it.
