This bar isn’t pretty but it’s pretty popular. Often dubbed the best patio in town, the raised outdoor surface allows for prime people-watching along Main St., while a seat at the bar will never do you wrong inside. Regulars, including bonafide foodies, recommend this place to just about everyone. So off we went … The breaded wings (with light flour) were crispy and hot, as per the server’s promise. Sauces aren’t made in-house. We tried the hot and honey, medium, and honey garlic. (The order comes with celery, carrots and ranch). The medium sauce had a hint of spice to it and went down real nice … so nice, I’d drink that sauce right out of the jug.
There’s no lasagna on the menu and we don’t even care. You won’t miss it. This hip Italian bar-slash-gastropub is one of the newest along Brant St., taking over the former Eatalia spot. I found this place while strolling downtown … the stunning aesthetic caught my eye so I went in to find out more, quickly realizing it’s Burlington’s best-kept (burger, pasta, bread … carb-loading) secret. To start, get the Sourdough Bread plate — with housemade bread, ricotta cheese, and an incredible butter compound. Then, just order the gnocchi and wait … it’s made in-house and you’ll quickly realize you’re in a legit Italian resto. There’s oodles of dairy and flavour and it’s so stellar you may nearly explode with happiness. The friendly owner, Jerod, and staff work hard to provide a stellar experience. Oh, and by the way, they’ve got craft beer on beer on beer on beer! Dozens … close to 100 varieties. Culaccino opened around summer 2016 and weekends are fully booked. Who says Italian restos have to be dark, stuffy, and old-fashioned?
The menu is curated and the offerings are fabulous. This cute little downtown Oakville spot opened its doors in October 2016 and is an under-the-radar dining experience when it comes to great Sicilian fare. If you’ve never been, start with the fried artichokes (incredible!) and order the steak (equally fabulous but keep in mind it’s not offered daily since the meat selection is changed up). We also dig the fabulously fabulous burrata-tomato salad! The resto is casual yet authentic, kid-friendly and - more importantly - offers a solid wine list, plus cocktails and beer. Service is very friendly. You must go.
There may be quite a few locations across the GTA, but don’t let that fool you, each location has some specialty items that the others don’t. While this may be tricky when going from location to location, it does help make each location a little bit unique - and unique is refreshing. The satay got me again here, but it was done very differently than any other satay pho I’ve had. This was one of the most flavourful phos I’ve ever come across and if I’m ever in the area, it’ll be a no-brainer for me to go back and have another. Pineapples in the dish help to offset the nodes of spice, but the heat here is not overwhelming at all. It’s a flavourful heat that blends with the soup perfectly. When you bite into a spring onion, the flavour profile changes yet again. Oakville, I hope you enjoy it as much as I did!
Traditional Greek cuisine with a sophisticated atmosphere. If you’re a lover of traditional Greek cuisine, then there’s a pretty good chance you love your meats. If that’s the case, the Grecian Platter is what you’re looking for. This platter for two comes with pita, sausage, chicken souvlaki, pork souvlaki, gyros, breaded kalamari, breaded shrimp, 2 Greek salads, rice pilaf, and lemon potatoes. How’s that for a platter? While the quantity may be immense, the quality here is key. The gyros were some of the best I’ve had in a very long time, and I’ll be surprised if they don’t raise an eyebrow or two when you try them as well. Got a craving for cheese? They have some flaming pan fried cheese and grilled halloumi that may just satisfy!
