Whether it’s got natural peanut butter and homemade cranberry jelly (which also pairs well with smoked turkey), there’s really nothing that can replace two hearty slices of bread holding together a bunch of randomly tremendous things. From downtown to Bronte and everywhere sandwiched in between, there are lots of places which offer up a carb-loaded meal. Perhaps it’s open face (my fave!) or involves pulled pork and lots of pickled vegetables. Why not skip that slice of pizza this week and go for a solid sandwich? If you’re looking to stray from your uber healthy lifestyle for a hot minute, let us introduce you to the Pollo Milanese Club. This sandwich features fried chicken, prosciutto, tomato, arugula, mozzarella, honey, pepperoncini, pickled veggies, and bomba aioli. This rustic modern Tuscan farmhouse in Bronte Harbour is gorgeous, with a mix of marble tables, pendant lighting, sconces and a retractable roof on the patio! (The heritage home is from 1843 … one look at the beautiful patio and I know where I’ll be parked all summer!) Created by the Mercanti family of Hamilton, the menu highlights sustainable seafood and classic italian spuntino (snacks or bites). Yolanda’s is home to coastal Italian fare. Service is as stellar as the sandwich.

If you’re looking for a bonafide hipster hot spot in Oakville, Bru is your go-to resto. The downtown joint hits every mark when it comes to on-trend dining: a rustic interior, an enviable craft beer selection (the best of its kind in the town, in fact) and a menu full of modern pub fare (some of which is gluten-free and vegan-friendly). Plus, they’re proud of the fact there’s no Wi-Fi (go ahead and act like it’s 1995 … talk to each other, the sign urges). Nestled along ‘restaurant row’, Bru supports more than 15 Ontario breweries and offers a variety of on-tap and bottled brews. As far as food goes, the diverse menu is satisfying and unique. If you’re in the mood for a sandwich, try The Brisket. It’s got in-house smoked brisket, honey bourbon BBQ sauce, pickles, and corn slaw. Yum! Get the fries, too.

The menu at this Hays Blvd. sandwich shop lists a wide variety of Italian sandwiches, including Veal, Chicken, Steak and Onions, Meatball, Sausage and Onions, Veggie, and Eggplant Parmesan. I’ve heard so much about this authentic family run Italian sandwich joint that I had to finally make a pit stop for a quick bite and see if it’s really “perfection on a bun.” Old-world Italian recipes and techniques are followed at this shop, where you’ll feel as though you’re at a family gathering, from the way you’re greeted to the way staff bid you farewell. The Veal sandwich is everything you’d expect it to be - greasy, meaty, made to order - and then some. Make sure you add cheese and mushrooms to take it up a notch! The Eggplant Parmesan is also outstanding. Service is phenomenal.

There’s no better fish sandwich in town. Equal parts healthy and delicious, this Blackened Atlantic Salmon Sandwich is served open-face on foccacia with mango salsa, citrus aioli, and avocado salsa. The combination of flavours is superb and I can only hope this item is on the menu the next time I go to Stoney’s. It’s a keeper! (So is the Nove sandwich, with a thick chicken breast, bacon, and provolone). With a wide selection of daily soups and artisan pizza, Stoney’s Bread Company has been delighting Kerr Village diners since 2004 and was even featured on You Gotta Eat Here! This market-fresh food is simply on point.
What to Order: Blackened Atlantic Salmon Sandwich
This casual dining option opened on May 3, 2017, and man, are they ever crushing it with their next-level sandwich game! The menu at this gourmet shop combines classic braising techniques with unconventional flavours. It offers up six sandwich options, including top sellers such as BBQ Pulled Pork, Beef + Kimchi, and Karaage (Japanese fried chicken), which are finished on the flat top. There’s also poutine, fresh cut fries, and milkshakes. Items are made fresh to order. But all you need to try is the Beef + Kimchi sandwich. Alongside the obvious ingredients, it’s got spicy bap sauce, sweet soy, and fresh scallions. Served on a French bun (that’s ridiculously delicous, one bite in!), it’s a serious flavour party in my mouth. It arrives on a cute little stainless steel serving tray. The sandwich looks and tastes spectacular. You’ll find the resto in the Fortino’s plaza at Dundas St. W. and Neyagawa Blvd. — look near the Hasty Market.
