A trial date has been set for an Oakville Catholic school board trustee facing fraud charges.

Halton Catholic District School Board trustee Nancy Guzzo, who is facing charges on 12 counts of fraud, made a virtual appearance at a Hamilton court on Friday (Jan. 28).

At the case management hearing, the trial for Guzzo has been set to begin on April 17, 2023. Additional court dates have been scheduled for the month.

Through her lawyer, Guzzo confirmed she is opting for a judge-only trial.

Guzzo is facing 10 counts of fraud under $5,000 and two counts of fraud over $5,000 in connection with an investigation probing her actions while she was an assistant business manager with LIUNA, a North American-wide union with some 500,000 members, including 80,000 in Canada.

Guzzo, elected in 2018 as one of three Oakville trustees at the Halton Catholic District School Board, was charged by police on Jan. 21.

She continues to serve as school board trustee in Oakville.
