An extreme cold warning is currently in effect due to a period of very cold wind chills expected this weekend and Monday.

“An arctic air mass is forecast to begin to move into Southern Ontario today,” Environment Canada reports. “Wind chill values are expected to fall to close to minus 35 overnight tonight, and overnight Sunday.”

“Wind chill values overnight Monday are expected to be close to minus 30.”

Conditions are expected to improve by Tuesday as a milder air mass moves in.

Residents are advised to stay indoors if possible and cover up when outside, as the cold weather may pose risks of frost bite and hypothermia.

Pets should also be brought in during extremely cold weather.

“Risks are greater for young children, older adults, people with chronic illnesses, people working or exercising outdoors, and those without proper shelter,” says Environment Canada.

“Cover up. Frostbite can develop within minutes on exposed skin, especially with wind chill.”
