VIDEO: Burlington Couple Sheds Light on Infertility

This year Canadian Infertility Awareness Week is running until April 27 (it kicked off on April 22).
This year Canadian Infertility Awareness Week is running until April 27 (it kicked off on April 22). And, in a recent press release, a couple from Burlington – Breya and Dan Rolt – shared their fertility story.
But first, a little background about infertility.
“Infertility can be defined as a failure to achieve a clinical pregnancy after 12 months of attempted conception without contraception,” reads the release. “A fertility consultation may be recommended after one year of attempted conception for women under 35 years of age, and six months for women over 35 years of age.”
The release continues to explain that age, length of time trying to conceive, hormone levels, medical history, along with others, are all factors that can contribute to fertility.
Although, fertility challenges are not exactly uncommon.

This is something that surprised Breya and Dan.
“When my husband and I found out we were going to need help starting our family, we had no idea what to expect,” Breya said in the release. “No one really talks about fertility issues until you are thrown into it. When we opened up about our experience, we were surprised to learn just how many people were in the same boat.”
In fact, one in six Canadian couples who are of the childbearing age experience challenges.
Fertility challenges, according to the release, are often viewed as an issue affecting the female reproductive system. However, men are almost just as likely to experience challenges.
Causes of fertility issues for men could include poor sperm quality, low sperm count, a history of sexually transmitted diseases, and hormonal imbalances, as noted in the release.
Potential causes for women could include age (fertility decreases after age 35), issues producing eggs, a history of sexually transmitted diseases, problems in the uterus or fallopian tubes, endometriosis, hormonal imbalances, and early menopause.
