The Walmart at 2065 Fairview St, Burlington remains closed today (March 31) after the store was evacuated last night.

According to reports, customers and staff were ordered out of the store around 7 p.m. and Burlington firefighters arrived at the scene.

UPDATE: Walmart says ‘shocking’ arson fire shut down store in Burlington

Initial indications were emergency crews were responding to a fire call, but other sources say a gas leak forced the evacuation. The Burlington Fire Department could not be reached for comment.

Customers in the store at the time who spoke to inhalton.com said it appeared that some type of disturbance occurred and then everyone was told to leave.

“We were told to get out so we did,” said one customer who asked not to be named. “Once we got outside a lot of fire trucks started to arrive.”

Late last night yellow and red tape blocked the entrances to the store.

A spokesman for Walmart confirmed there was an incident but could not comment on the exact nature of what happened. They said the store is expected to reopen tomorrow.

A social media report issued by Walmart said the store was closed due to “unforeseen circumstances” and that updates would be provided later.
