Oakville’s downtown liquor store is closing next month, inhalton.com has learned.

The last day of operation for the 276 Lakeshore Rd. location is July 15, LCBO spokesperson Christine Bujold confirmed.

Rental fees are being cited as the reason for shuttering its doors near Trafalgar Rd.

“The landlord requested a significant increase in the minimum rent to renew the lease,” said Bujold.

When reached by telephone on Tuesday, Ontario Public Service Employees Union (OPSEU) president Warren “Smokey” Thomas said he wasn’t aware of the closure and is looking into it.

For customers who live downtown or otherwise frequent the store regularly, Bujold suggests visiting the flagship location at 321 Cornwall Rd.

It “offers customers a significantly larger product selection, longer hours of operation and is located less than 2 kms from the Lakeshore Road site,” said Bujold.

On top of convenience, “our community-based flagship store also provides customers with ample free parking, a tasting bar, access to flagship store exclusive products and has six product consultants on staff who are committed to providing responsible and knowledgeable service to customers,” Bujold said.

LCBO staff currently employed at the downtown location will be redeployed to other stores, “in most cases closer to their homes,” said Bujold, adding “no jobs are expected to be lost” as a result of the closure.
