A cyclist is fighting for her life in hospital after an SUV struck her and three other vehicles in Burlington last night.

Halton Regional Police say that shortly before 6 p.m., a 64-year-old Burlington woman was driving her Honda CRV westbound on Fairview Street when it collided with another vehicle also moving westbound.

The Honda continued westward until it reached Walkers Line, where it hit a 19-year-old Hamilton woman standing on the channelizing island at the northeast corner of the intersection, investigators say.

The SUV reportedly crashed into two other vehicles before coming to a stop.

The cyclist was transported to the hospital with life-threatening injuries and is currently receiving medical treatment.

Police have not indicated whether any occupants of the other vehicles sustained injuries, and it is not clear if the 64-year-old driver had any passengers in her vehicle.

The cause of the collision is under investigation, officials say.

A similar incident took place about a week ago in Oakville, where a 57-year-old cyclist was struck by a car and sustained serious injuries. Updates on his condition are currently unknown.

Witnesses or motorists with dashboard camera footage who have not spoken with police are asked to contact the Collision Reconstruction Unit at 905-825-4747 ext. 5065.
