A call to honour historic golf course made for new Milton development site

A Milton councillor hopes the historical significance of a local golf course will be remembered long after it is redeveloped into an industrial park.
Ward 2 Councillor John Challinor says a plaque or possibly a street name should be used at the site where the old Trafalgar Golf & Country Club once stood at Sixth Line and Derry Road.
The club operated for almost 60 years and served as a training ground for many young golfers who went on to professional golf careers including Oakville’s Sandra Post, the first Canadian to play on the LPGA (Ladies Professional Golf Association) Tour.
Designed by legendary golf course architect Robbie Robinson, Trafalgar was noted for its challenging design that tested and pushed the skill limits of those who were looking to better their game
At a meeting this week to discuss the development proposal, Challinor asked a representative for the developer to consider the acknowledgement.
“This was a pretty significant gold course historically in the Town of Milton and it also has national significance as it was not only a place where professional golfers played as they prepared to play in the Canadian Open, but it was a training course for some of Canada’s best professional golfers,” said Challinor.

The councillor suggested that a sub-name of the development, internal street name or plaque at the site would be appropriate.
Town staff said they would work with the developer to try to come up with an acknowledgement plan.
Meanwhile, the development project is moving forward with the builder anxious to get started on the project which could begin later this year if all approvals are met.
The project on the 62-hectare piece of land calls for a large complex of various-sized buildings that would be used for light industrial warehouses and offices. It would also create an extension of Clark Boulevard to Derry Road.
