If you mentioned pickleball a few years ago most people wouldn’t know what you are talking about. Now, the sport is seemingly taking over courts across the nation.

Is pickleball the wave of the future or just a passing trend? Burlington wants to know.

The City is launching a review for all registered and drop-in programs offered through the Recreation, Community and Culture Department with the goal of determining trends and the future needs of residents.

Currently, the City provides many recreation programs for all ages on a year-round basis including aquatics, skating, music, theatre, arts and culture, camps, fitness, sport and accessible recreation programs.

The review will look at programs available in other municipalities as well as getting feedback from the public.

A consultant has been hired by the City to explore best practices including program offerings, emerging trends and opportunities. Once the data is collected and analyzed it will help determine the future direction of program offerings.

And, as part of this project, Burlington wants public feedback on recreation programs. The survey can be reached by following this link.

As for pickleball, its roots can be traced back to 1965 when a U.S. politician and a businessman, looking for a family sport, cobbled together some equipment and developed the rules. The rest, as they say, is history. As for the name, there are two accounts but the one that we will go with her is that it is named after one of the inventor’s dogs, “Pickles.” You can watch here to learn how to play pickleball.

Burlington has several opportunities to learn or play pickleball. You can find out more here.
