Burlington and Hamilton make list of most dangerous cities for driving in Ontario

Burlington, Hamilton and an area of Caledon are some of Ontario’s most dangerous places for driving, according to a recent report.

Using data collected from over 100,000 quotes since 2020, insurance comparison site MyChoice compiled a list of the 10 safest and 10 most dangerous Ontario cities to drive in.

The results found Brantford to be the most dangerous city, followed by Ajax, Kingston, Bolton (Caledon), and Burlington. Hamilton is listed as the ninth most dangerous city.

Meanwhile, Toronto is considered the safest city, closely followed by Richmond Hill and Whitby.

“In mid 2023, the Ontario Provincial Police reported a 32% increase in fatal collisions, compared to the same time in 2022,” says the report.

“This statistic underscores the importance of understanding which areas in Ontario are safer for drivers.”

The report also lists Ontario cities by the percentage of drivers with infractions on record and accidents on record. The cities of Brantford, Brampton, Hamilton, Barrie, Ajax, and Windsor made the top 10 on both lists.

Top cities by infractions on record:

  1. Brantford: 18.18%
  2. Hamilton: 13.38%
  3. Barrie: 13.09%
  4. Ajax: 13.05%
  5. Bolton: 12.70%
  6. Kingston: 12.58%
  7. St Catharines: 11.79%
  8. Windsor: 10.39%
  9. Kitchener: 10.16%
  10. Brampton: 10.07%

Top cities by accidents on record:

  1. Brantford: 15.15%
  2. Ajax: 14.69%
  3. Kingston: 13.84%
  4. Burlington: 13.49%
  5. Windsor: 12.64%
  6. Barrie: 12.27%
  7. Brampton: 12.12%
  8. Hamilton: 11.92%
  9. Oakville: 11.73%
  10. London: 11.61%

The report was conducted by using data collected from over 100,000 quotes since 2020, including 2,274 accidents and 5,080 tickets. The methodology was based on the averages of accidents and infractions, weighted with a 70/30 ratio.

“This study sheds light on the disparities in driving conditions across Ontario and emphasizes the need for targeted improvements in road safety,” said Aren Mirzaian, CEO of MyChoice.
